Successful launch of two satellites – important milestone for the actual use of Liechtenstein's satellite frequencies
The Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein announces that a significant step has been successfully implemented today in connection with the allocation order for satellite radio frequencies issued by the Office of Communications on December 3, 2025.
At 11:52 a.m. Central European Time, an Electron rocket lifted off from the Rocket Lab launch site in New Zealand, safely delivering two Open Cosmos satellites into their intended orbits. The rocket reached its target orbit at an altitude of 1,050 kilometers as planned, and the deployment of the two satellites was completely successful. With the confirmation "payload separation confirmed" from Mission Control about an hour and ten minutes after launch, the mission "The Cosmos Will See You Now" was successfully completed. This marks the fulfillment of the first key milestone in relation to the regulatory obligations to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The decree issued on December 3, 2025 stipulates that, following the "suspension" of filings in February 2023, two Bringing Back Into Use (BBIU) satellites must be operational by February 26, 2026, at the latest. These satellites must remain operational in their designated orbital path for at least 90 days. With today's successful launch, this first step has been achieved.
The ability of the two satellites to actually transmit in the corresponding frequencies will now be tested so that the successful BBIU can finally be reported to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Today's success thus represents an important milestone in securing Liechtenstein's existing frequency rights and at the same time strengthens Liechtenstein's position as a reliable location for the development of a sustainable space economy.
As further regulatory steps envisaged by the ITU, 50% of the constellation must now be deployed in space by June or September 2026. The entire constellation must then be fully deployed by June or September 2028.
The government congratulates all partners and organizations involved for their professional cooperation and the successful completion of the mission.
