Nuscha Wieczorek becomes Liechtenstein's new representative on the College of the EFTA Surveillance Authority

The EEA/EFTA states Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway have appointed the College of the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) based in Brussels in the usual four-year cycle. Liechtenstein will now be represented by Ms. Nuscha Wieczorek in the political management body of the ESA (College). Norway and Iceland will nominate their current representatives, Mr. Arne Røksund and Mr. Árni Páll Árnason, for a new term of office. Mr. Røksund will also continue to serve as President of the College.

The EFTA Surveillance Authority ensures that the EEA/EFTA states fulfill their obligations under the EEA Agreement. It has similar powers to the EU Commission. The EFTA Surveillance Authority is headed by the College, which is made up of one member from each EEA/EFTA state. In total, the EFTA Surveillance Authority employs over 80 experts from all over Europe. The main task of the ESA is to monitor the implementation and correct application by the EEA/EFTA states of the EU legal acts incorporated into the EEA Agreement in accordance with the treaty. To this end, the ESA is in close contact with the three states.

Ms. Nuscha Wieczorek moved from the Office of Foreign Affairs to the Mission of Liechtenstein to the European Union in 2020 and has been the Deputy Ambassador there since January 2022. Ms. Wieczorek holds a doctorate in law from the University of Basel and an LL.M. from Columbia Law School (New York). Before joining the diplomatic service in 2017, she held various research and teaching positions in the field of national and international public law at Swiss universities. She succeeds Mr. Stefan Barriga.
