Liechtenstein signs Digital Economy Agreement with Singapore

On Thursday, September 25, 2025, the EFTA states of Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway signed the Digital Economy Agreement (DEA) together with Singapore in Bern. Ambassador Frank Büchel, Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to the international organizations in Geneva, attended the ceremony on behalf of Liechtenstein. The DEA adds a new chapter on digital trade to the existing free trade agreement, which has been in force since 2003.

Singapore is of increasing economic importance for Liechtenstein companies. Its political stability, innovation-promoting economic policy and geographical location make Singapore an attractive location. The new chapter in the free trade agreement underlines the strategic importance of digital trade as a key driver of economic growth and facilitates seamless digital trade between companies in the EFTA states and Singapore. It enables businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises, to benefit from new opportunities in the rapidly evolving digital economy. In addition, the chapter contains provisions for open and secure cross-border data flows and the promotion of a trustworthy digital environment for individuals and businesses. This includes the protection of personal data. The contracting parties also reaffirm the importance of cooperation in areas such as FinTech, artificial intelligence and the interoperability of digital infrastructures.
